Vermont Heritage Network: Historic Architecture

Montpelier Historic District

After several other communities had the distinction of being the State Capital, Montpelier was chosen for the permanent site in 1808. The arrival of the railroad and the National Life Insurance Company spurred the growth of Montpelier after the Civil War. The district has a rich mix of residential, commercial, institutional, and government buildings which make up the core of the downtown area.
