Fair Haven was an early industrial center in the state. Its economic strength came from the nearby slate and marble quarries. Also, the community was an important junction on the Underground Railroad. The district is centered around a spacious green, surrounded by 42 religious, residential, commercial, and public buildings, including the First National Bank and two marble houses, one of which is now operated as an inn.
