An outstanding example of a 19th-century settlement, the village has more than 200 buildings surrounding two greens. Marble-cutting mills and other industrial enterprises led to its prosperity. Marble commonly appears in curbs and sidewalks, as well as in building details. Brandon was the birthplace of Stephen A. Douglas.
