Newbury Historic District

Located along the Connecticut River, the Town of Newbury has six historic districts. Newbury village is concentrated around an open public common. Wells River village includes commercial blocks and the surrounding residential area. Isolated by surrounding hills, West Newbury is a well-preserved village with 14 significant buildings. South Newbury is on a ridge overlooking the Connecticut River and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The Bayley Historic District, north of Newbury village on Route 5, is named for General Jacob Bayley, who founded Newbury and built the Bayley-Hazen Military Road during the American Revolution. The Oxbow historic district, considered to be one of the most scenic spots in Vermont, overlooks rich farmland and the Great Oxbow in the Connecticut River.
