Located on one of the most beautiful waterfront settings in Vermont, Shelburne Farms is the former estate of Dr. and Mrs. William Steward Webb. A railroad entrepreneur, Dr. Webb began amassing the 4,000-acre estate in the late 1800s (approx. 1,000 acres of the estate remain intact today). It was one of the grandest estates in New England and the finest in Vermont. The undulating landscape is punctuated by three massive buildings: the main house, which overlooks Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks, a coach barn, and a horseshoe-shaped farm barn. The property is now owned and operated by a nonprofit corporation, Shelburne Farms Resources, Inc. Tours are available seasonally. Admission. The property is also open for special events, including the Vermont Mozart Festival and Vermont Symphony concerts, which are held during the summer. (Harbor Road. Tel. 802-985-8686)
