This summer Design Workshop course focused on community facilitation, development, and design by working directly with the Center for Agricultural Economy in Hardwick, Vermont and their Atkins Field Project. Students looked at how reclamation of the Woodbury Granite Company property could provide a sustainable agricultural education and resource center which facilitated ongoing community uses; agricultural functions and innovations; river, forest and recreation opportunities; as well as safeguarding Hardwick's role in the historic granite industry. Reclamation and reuse of the property included looking at Burlington’s Intervale as a model, physical design needs for agricultural and building uses, ensuring ecologic functions of the site, and connectivity to the larger regional context. The course included examples of community projects from Vermont, participation by members of the Center, and guest speakers.

The course was supported by UVMs CUPS; CDAE; RSENR; Continuing Education; Federal, State, and Community Relations departments.
