For the University of Vermont’s Class of 2020, a traditional commencement remains a red-letter day in their futures, the time when they will reunite on the University Green in graduation gowns and mortarboards. Though that event, date to be determined, is a hopeful day on the horizon, the official conferral of 3,000 degrees on Sunday, May 17, to graduates from 39 states and 30 foreign countries was its own milestone worthy of marking in its own way. 

The class’s academic achievement was saluted online on Sunday with a UVM Class of 2020 Celebration that included video remarks from university and state leaders, a photo slideshow of graduates, and announcements of Outstanding Student Leadership Awards. 

Words from UVM President Suresh Garimella and Vermont Governor Phil Scott ’80 spoke to the challenge of these times and how the Class of 2020 has met that challenge.

“You have shown a strength and tenacity that I know will keep you in good stead in the years to come. The past few months have been tough, not just for our UVM community, but for millions around the world. And yet, here you are, soon-to-be graduates despite challenges that few of us ever imagined,” Garimella said in his opening remarks. “I have no doubt you will go far. And I look forward to the time — soon — when we can celebrate your achievements on the Green, together and in person,” he concluded.
