Integrated Humanities Program

 Dear Prospective Students and Parents,

Dear Prospective Students and Parents,

Welcome to the Integrated Humanities Program Website. This year the incoming class represents a milestone in the course of the program; the thirtieth year that our liberal arts interdisciplinary program will be offered. Each year, approximately thirty students join the IHP. The faculty also serve as advisors and mentors to IHP participants. Our course of study is designed with the following objectives in mind:

  1. To provide students with a solid foundation in the core texts, thinkers and events of the Humanities, and therefore, of a liberal arts education. We understand education as a transformative experience that takes place in an environment with other interested students who have the chance to live and work together, while at the same time remaining open to the larger college and university.
  2. While we study texts and thinkers who have helped shape the Western philosophic, literary and historical traditions, we do so with an emphasis on promoting self-knowledge.  This means that our study of the past helps us to better understand the complex world in which we are living.
  3. The program aims to encourage continuity between classes and an interdisciplinary understanding of varied subject matter.

Students from the IHP come from a wide range of backgrounds and have a diverse range of academic majors including the fine arts, the natural and social sciences, foreign languages, as well as Philosophy, Religion, Literature and History. Students have gone on to careers in journalism, politics, medicine, law, education and business. We encourage all interested students to use the information on this website to learn more about the program and consider applying.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely,

Professor Richard I. Sugarman
Director, Integrated Humanities Program
