Integrated Humanities Program
On what is admission to the IHP based?
Interests, motivation, compatibility
with aims of the IHP.
What are teh aims of IHP?
In short, to provide a one-year
foundation in a liberal arts education. Students can major or minor in
virtually any subject after this time.
Does applying early help?
Yes. While it is not a gurantee, early
interest applications are taken seriously as an expression of
motivation.
Do I need to take all the courses in the program?
The answer to that is yes. The program
is configured so that the various parts while standing on their own, go
together
to make up a whole. We do make rare exceptions for not taking one of
the courses, especially in the Spring semester for warranted reasons.
Do I have to live in the Living/Learning Center?
Usually yes. The exceptions pertain to
students who live at home, or in the Honors College, live off-campus
for religious reasons. Keep in mind that while there are approximately
30 students in the IHP, the entire complex of LLC is 550 students. The
idea is to provide a residentially based learning commmunity that is
not isolate from other students.
Can I get additional information from former IHP students about the
program?
Yes. We have a number of students
presently at UVM and approximately 1000 alumni. There are students
currently working at the IHP office who would be happy to give you
further information.
What kind of relationships do students have with professors?
The professors serve as advisors, as
well as teachers to the students. The IHP office is located downstairs
in the LLC from where most students live. Students have ready
accessibility to instructors.
How much work is the IHP?
The focus in the IHP is on reading and
discussion. Writing asssignments have the advantage of taking into
account the pace of progressin each of the three IHP courses, so that
students are seldom over burdened with having to turn in papers to more
than one course at a time.
In what sense is the program interdisciplinary?
The program is genuinely
interdisciplinary. The core instructors have taught together for over
twenty-five years and are continually seeking to provide bridges
between literature, history, religion, and philosophy. What you discuss
in one course will frequently find its way into another, although
perhaps in a different manner.
What is the relationship between the IHP and other TAP programs?
For many years the IHP was the only
TAP program. In other words, the IHP was the model for future TAP
programs. It has now been supplemented by other integrated programs and
courses offeredin specific majors. You cannot take the IHP and another
TAP.
Can I be in the Honors College and the IHP?
We are only permitted to take three
Honors College students per year into the IHP. However, we have had
Honors College Students every year since the Honors College opened.
