EMU REVIVAL - Fall Semester 2003
Jane Jarecki
With the intention of joining an organization outside of SGA, I looked to the
English Department webpage for more information. The flightless EMU page
eventually led me to a professor who explained that the past EMU dissolved
with a few graduating students. There were too few submissions and little
interest to publish The Review and the budget went unused.
I sent a proposal “The New EMU: Be there. Be square,” to Todd McGowan who read
it at the department conference over the summer and secured funding for the
Union. He agreed to take on the faculty advisor role and has been relentlessly
helpful. Dawn Pelkey, one of the aforementioned students, is still dedicated
to the cause. With Dawn’s help, we’ve updated this page.
As a fortunate consequence of new beginning we had [have] the freedom to spend
and learn as we please. About twenty people responded to our mass emails and
seductively free pizza. On three different occasions, various students met and
discussed potential strategies for running EMU, read poetry, or exchanged
books.
But the Union was not really unifying. This semester more students need to
benefit.
I find electronic communication to be the most effective as far as promotion and
scheduling - but for stimulating discussion... we can sponsor book groups, host
writing-slams, perhaps even bring literary folk to campus.
Well.
We dare you to get involved...
