UVM Theatre presents Shakespeare in Love
- By Wayne Tetrick
The UVM Department of Theatre and Dance will bring a rousing production of Shakespeare in Love to the Royall Tyler Theatre stage February 26 thru March 1. Adapted from the Academy award winning film, Shakespeare in Love is a delightful, rowdy and romantic theatrical experience. It tells the story of a young Will Shakespeare who has writer's block... the deadline for his new play is fast approaching but he's in desperate need of inspiration. That is, until he finds his muse – Viola. This beautiful young woman is Will’s greatest admirer and will stop at nothing (including breaking the law) to appear in his next play. Against a bustling background of mistaken identity, ruthless scheming and backstage theatrics, Will’s love for Viola quickly blossoms and inspires him to write his greatest masterpiece.
Shakespeare in Love will be directed by Craig Wells, UVM Theatre faculty member who directed Hand to God in our 2018/2019 season. This production will feature the talents of 18 UVM students who will bring over 40 characters to life, including a dog! A testament to the power of love and to theatre itself, this adventure of love, drama and comedy is sure to equally delight Shakespeare fans and those who shy away from the Bard.
Shakespeare in Love will be presented Feb. 26 – Mar. 1 in the Royall Tyler Theatre at 116 University Place. Evening performances are at 7:30PM, Feb. 26 - 29. Matinee performances are at 2:00PM, Feb. 29 & Mar. 1.
