The 35th Annual African Literature Association Conference
About Your Hosts
The University of Vermont is located in Burlington, the state’s most accessible and popular city. It is the largest institution of higher education in Vermont, with 8,100 undergraduate students, 1,303 graduate students, 449 medical students, and 1,092 non-degree students. UVM offers the beauty and serenity of a Vermont location and the extensive academic resources of a research university. The university offers more than 2,200 courses (96% of them taught by full-time professors), and 90 majors and programs are represented.
The University of Vermont and the nearby Sheraton Conference Center (location of most of the conference activities) both are located approximately three miles from Burlington International Airport. Airlines serving this airport include Continental Express, Delta, Jet Blue, Linear Air, US Airways, US Airways Express, United Airlines, and United Express. Direct air service to Vermont is available from Cleveland, Detroit, New York, Pittsburg, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. If traveling by car, Vermont features two major interstates and a well-maintained network of state highways. It is easily accessible to the rest of New England, New York, and Montreal.
The Sheraton Burlington Hotel and Conference Center will be the primary conference facility. Conveniently located next to the University of Vermont, downtown business and shopping centers, scenic Lake Champlain, the airport, and many local attractions, the site should prove ideal for the ALA 2009 conference. A courtesy airport van and easy access to Interstate 89 allows for convenient local access. Many other hotels and inns (minutes away) and (like the Sheraton) will be offering discounted rates.
In addition to activities being held at the Sheraton, the university’s new Davis Student Center will host several events such as the opening ceremonies and the Saturday evening banquet. The Davis Center, which is just minutes away from the Sheraton, houses restaurants, the university bookstore, ATM machines, internet cafes, and conference rooms.
