Models of staggered (right) ethane and eclipsed (left) ethane. Rotate the molecules into angles that resemble those depicted in the Newman projection and then the dash-wedge representation.
Here's a model of decane (count the carbons!) in which every C-C s bond is staggered. Note that this results in a linear, zig-zag geometry. Rotate the molecule to put every C-C bond in the plane of the screen, and note the resulting orientation of the C-H bonds.
