UVM TRIO/SSS students who are interested in earning a doctorate degree should consider applying for the UVM TRIO/McNair program. The mission of the McNair Scholars Program is to work with qualified UVM undergraduates to increase the number of first generation, limited income and underrepresented minority students who earn a doctorate. The McNair Scholars Program provides eligible UVM undergraduates with critical academic, research and professional experiences to enhance their competitiveness in gaining admission to doctoral programs. Students with undergraduate majors in the natural and social sciences, humanities, math, education, and engineering are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship(IGERT) program - seeks undergraduate students interested in building the technical, professional and personal skills needed to address the global questions of the future. The mission of the IGERT National Recruitment Program is to help undergraduate students find a research program that is right for them, and help IGERT faculty find the students that are right for their programs. As part of its mission, IGERT seeks to increase the participation of underrepresented groups, including women and minorities, in doctorate programs in the engineering, science and mathematics fields. Funded by the National Science Foundation, IGERT programs provide participants with the edge needed to become leaders in their chosen fields. There are multiple opportunities with different deadlines.
National Aeronatics and Space Administration (NASA) - Undergraduate research opportunities throughout the country for college juniors and seniors who are U.S. citizens, majoring in the sciences, engineering, computer science or math, and hold a 3.0 minimum GPA. The deadline is January 31 every year.
Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) - Administered by the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), an academic consortium of the Big Ten Schools plus the university of Chicago, SROP features undergraduate research opportunities for college sophomores, juniors and seniors of all majors who are interested in careers on college campuses as teaching faculty or researchers. Applicants must be from groups underrepresented in their fields, and must be US citizens or permanent residents. Deadlines are between January and February of each year for the following summer.
