What is the Member of the Month Award?

In the fall of 2006 the officers of Tri-Beta created the Member of the Month Award to recognize members who have contributed to the society beyond expectations.  This is an award for members who are nominated by their peers and selected on the basis of scholarship, research and service to both the community and Tri-Beta.

November 2008

Lee Dorf is currently a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Science with minors in Holocaust Studies and Chemistry. He is the President of the TriBeta Biological Honor Society, Upsilon Tau Chapter, for the 2008-2009 academic year. Lee has been involved in both volunteering at FAHC and research on campus for the past three years. He has volunteered in several departments all over the hospital, including: patient support, the pediatric ward, the emergency department and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Lee has been working in the lab with Dr. Giselle Sholler to find treatments for Neuroblastoma, a devastating pediatric cancer of the sympathetic nervous system. Lee has presented his research posters at several conferences around the world. (SURF @ UVM April 2007; ASPHO May 2007 Toronto, Canada; AACR April 2008 San Diego, CA; TriBeta Regional Conference April 2008 Hartwick College Oneonta, NY; ANR May 2008 Chiba, Japan; TriBeta National Biennial Conference May 2008 Northern Kentucky University Highland Heights, KY.) In addition to his two First Place John C. Johnson awards at last spring’s both regional and national TriBeta conferences, Lee was just awarded a $600 TriBeta Research Grant. Thus far this semester, Lee has worked hard to promote the presence of TriBeta on campus by increasing the number of weekly tutoring sessions offered, encouraging membership, supervising fundraisers, and developing a new relationship with the Burlington Kaplan Test Center. Lee appreciates the support he has received from his executive committee and other TriBeta members, and knows that all this could not have happened without them. He hopes to be able to get more members involved in TriBeta sponsored events as well as research on campus. Congratulations to Lee for being Member-of-the-Month for November 2008!

JB-2

November 2006

Jennifer Brett Lanza, or JB as we all know her, was inducted into Tri-Beta in 2006.  Although only an associate member, she has contributed immensely to our young and growing organization.   She is a senior Biochemistry and Chemistry double major.  She spent this summer in Burlington doing research on organic synthesis in Dr. Krapcho’s lab, and is continuing that work through this semester.  She is also currently a TA for Chem 023 lab, tutors high school chemistry here in Burlington, and is a life guard and swim instructor at the YMCA.  Though incredibly busy, she has shown exemplary service to Tri-Beta.  Last year she created the Tri-Beta list serve and has helped the officers to keep that list updated.  She has continued to be involved in Tri-Beta activities and serves on the tutoring committee.  JB Lanza has illustrated the ideals of Tri-Beta through her scholarship, undergraduate research, service to the community and service to Tri-Beta.  Congratulations to JB on being the first ever recipient of the Tri-Beta member of the Month Award.
