In 2010-11, the University undertook its initial round of strategic, focused investments in its three transdisciplinary Spires of Excellence: Complex Systems, Food Systems, and Neuroscience, Behavior and Health. These investments offered faculty across campus the opportunity to collaborate and advance research and scholarship in these areas as well as graduate and undergraduate education. In 2010-11, UVM invested in a first round of tenure-track hires aligned with the TRI's three priority research areas. Through an innovative hiring process that connected traditional faculty search committees with TRI Steering Committee input, a total of 18 hires were made across nine UVM schools and colleges.
