Morning Speaker: Sister Phylis Stein the Fragrant, FPM, SPI.
Film Screening: “Transshorts”
Fantasy, spoken word, animation, homage, transformation and tradition pepper this collection with comedy and charm representing a vast array of trans images. Trans Slam poet Marcus Rene Van (of Deep Dickollective) gets the ball rolling in a mesh of spoken word and black and white images followed by an overview of historical and contemporary Native American concepts of gender, sexuality and sexual orientation. A drive and a guy-to-guy chat illuminates pointers on being a “straight boy,” and a dramedy promises a miraculous operation. The program concludes with a reflection of four years and transition of a Filipino transsexual in Australia and an operatic masterpiece of animation from Spain.
Trans 101 Kelly Riel and Toby MacNutt
Are you new to transgender topics and issues? Do you have some questions about the basics of trans anything? Are you wondering what the heck this whole conference is about anyway? Or maybe you just want a refresher on some of the intro topics to transgender anything! In any case, this session would be for you. We'll do a presentation about trans basics (hence 101 in the title) and open it up for questions and answers, where pretty much any question is fair game. Also, the two presenters for this session have been told that they should have a sitcom together... where they do trans 101 sessions.
Hello, Cruel World: Survival Tips for Sex and Gender Outlaws Kate Bornstein
Sometimes, whatever it is that gives you the most joy, pleasure or relief also gets you into the deepest trouble, especially when you try to explain it to other people. That happens a lot in the LGBTQ world, where sometimes we even exclude each other or hurt other the feelings of people who are supposed to be like tribe to us.
Does the way you express your erotic self makes other people queasy... people in power, people wearing badges, or just some mean people? This is a crazy world, and as harmless as you feel you're being, people may still think you're bad, wrong or immoral. You don't have to feel like that. There are ways you can make life more worth living.
This is a 75 minute workshop, in which Kate suggests irreverent alternatives to suffering as a 21st Century outlaw. The workshop is based on Kate's shiny new book, Hello, Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks, and Other Outlaws. ...and the Rest of the Trans Agenda Gunner Scott
The fight for transgender rights does not end with passing non-discrimination ordinances and laws, it is actually just the beginning. Transgender communities deal with a myriad of issues created by flawed policies, ignorance, and the binary gender system, much of which can be addressed through grassroots advocacy work. This workshop will look at: Addressing policies, procedures, and practices of changing identity documents; dismantling policies that require SRS or other medical interventions in order to be accepted as the gender a person lives as and for some access to services designed for low incomes/no income needs; responding to backlash legislation such as blocking transgender related medical care for transgender prisoners.
Voice Change for the Individual Going Through Gender Reassignment Gayle Belin
This presentation will introduce the audience to some of the components and goals of voice/speech therapy for voice feminization or masculinization. Individuals undergoing gender reassignment (Male to Female or Female to Male) often require attention to communication behaviors, such as voice and speech in order to blend in and “pass”. Voice modification addresses adjustments in pitch, resonance, and other more abstract vocal characteristics.

Genderqueer Caucus
Film Screening: “FTF: Female to Femme”
FtF: Female to Femme imagines a world in which the journey toward femme was understood to be as radical as journeys to claim and inhabit other queer bodies. Envisioning more than it documents, this documentary celebrates dyke femme identities, combining farce and seduction with analysis and personal history. For years, femmes have forged community and created space for themselves out of edgy performance and authentic parody. FtF recognizes these strategies and builds them into an unforgettable sexy, funny and moving film.

We hope to create networks of volunteers to effectively organize around such divergences in the future.
Stories in the Community, Stories Over Time Eli Clare
The stories that trans people and SOFFAs tell about who we are often change over time, and yet we often face pressure from a variety of sources to create a single linear, static narrative about our many identities. Through journal writing and small group sharing, this interactive storytelling workshop will explore the power of telling stories that shift, change, and contradict each other over time.

Developing as a Trans Ally Denise L. Pickering and Jacqueline (Jackie) Weinstock
This workshop is focused on supporting non-trans individuals to develop and act as allies to trans individuals and trans communities. The Privilege of Passing Kyle Cortis
This session will discuss why passing is a privilege and how that affects one's life and gives them opportunities that others who do not pass as well may not have. Passing is often a heated topic within trans communities with some people saying it doesn't matter and others saying it does. The session argues that passing does matter, both in and outside of the trans community, and has real privileges attached to it.
