Winter Break Tips
 We wish
you well as you begin to wrap up the fall semester. As you look ahead
to the long Winter Break
please keep these tips in mind if you plan to
leave town for an extended period of time:

Keep thermostat above 55 degrees in your
apartment to avoid
frozen pipes.

Make sure all windows and doors are locked and
close your curtains and blinds.

Do not hide spare keys in places outside.
-
Arrange for a friend, neighbor whom you
trust, or the landlord to watch over your house while you are away.
-
Take anything of value home with you. Don’t
leave any valuable items near windows.
-
Stop mail and paper delivery (https://holdmail.usps.com/duns/HoldMail.jsp)
or arrange for a neighbor to pick it up daily.

Town
Center Merrier Fridays
Friday afternoons and evenings in December leading
up to 12/24 are
about surprising and delighting Burlington Town Center shoppers!
Ambassadors will move through the mall with random perks and
surprises,
while sharing all of the great offers available at that time from its
retailers! Shoppers are eligible for a FREE, $10 gift card with a
purchase of $100 or more while supplies last by bringing receipts from
the day totaling $100 or more to the Redemption Zone on the lower level
by Macy’s. The Redemption Zone will be open from 4:00p.m. to 8:00p.m.
This event will happen every Friday through Dec. 17.
New Online Crime Reporting 
Online
Crime Reporting is now available for citizens to report low-level
events to the Burlington Police Department. Online reports may be
submitted directly by members of the public for the following types of
Incidents:

Lost property
-
Graffiti/Unlawful Mischief
-
Harassing Phone Calls (unknown suspect only)
-
Late Reported Car Accidents (including those
in which a vehicle fled the scene and there is no suspect vehicle)
-
Theft/Petit Larceny
-
Vandalism/Unlawful Mischief
-
Identity Theft
Only reports of events that are NOT in
progress, occurred in Burlington, do not have suspects, do not have
physical evidence, do not have witnesses to be interviewed, and do not
have other follow-up or investigative opportunities will be taken
online. The system provides direct guidance on the reporting
parameters as reports are made.
Once a report is submitted, members of the Records Unit can communicate
directly with the reporting person for more information as necessary.

Energy Usage with Appliance Meter from BED
There may be some appliances in your home that use
a lot more electricity than you realize. If you would like to find out
what they are using you may borrow a Watts Up
meter from BED for up to
two weeks. The Watts Up meter will measure the amount of electricity
different devices in your home use. You will then know what is having
the biggest impact on your electric bill.
Remember that you can also access up to 36 months
of
past electricity usage by visiting the BED website.
Be sure
to have a copy of your latest monthly electric bill available for
account information.

Warm ~ Ride the
Bus for Free
UVM students, faculty, and staff ride the CCTA
city buses for free courtesy of UVM! Just swipe your UVM ID and enjoy a
comfortable heated trip up the hill to campus.
The City
Loop bus is a popular choice for students and picks up passengers
at the corner of No. Union/North St., No.
Union/No. Winooski
Ave., and North Willard/Archibald Street.
The City Loop drops off at Waterman as well as near Redstone
Campus.
If you are coming from Winooski try picking up the Essex
Junction Bus at the Champlain Mill. There is also the College
Street Shuttle which is a great way to get from campus to downtown
or
vice versa. You can even take your bike on all city buses if you
need a more direct route home!

TV
and Electronics
Disposal Options
Here is information on where you can dispose of an
old TV as cheaply as possible: Depending on the brand, there are
several free and low-cost options. For example, CSWD accepts all Sony
TVs from residents of Chittenden County free of charge at all of its Drop-Off
Centers. That's because Sony is among a handful of manufacturers
that have launched take-back programs where they subsidize the cost of
recycling their own products. That's called Product Stewardship. It's
also an example of being a good corporate citizen.

electronics of any kind here,
as well as
what fee, if any, is involved. At the bottom of the page you'll find a
list of other free and fee-based collection programs for a variety of
electronic products.
Beginning January 1, 2011, it will be illegal to
dispose of a wide range of electronics in the landfill. Click here
for a
list of banned items and a timeline for the State of Vermont to
implement free collection points for them.

20th Annual Book Gift Campaign for Kids
The Fletcher Free Library invites community
members to
participate in the 20th Annual “Books for Children Gift Campaign,”
which provides Burlington preschoolers  with new,
quality books during
the holiday season. Choose from our list or make your own
selections, then purchase books at participating bookstores for a
discount - Borders, Crow or Hopkins. Books are distributed
through the Sara Holbrook Center, the King Street Youth Center, the VNA
Family Room, the COTS Family Shelter, and Head Start of Chittenden
