Come to the Community Coalition Common Ground Summit!

Common Ground Summit

Are you a student looking for experience in community development in Burlington?  Perhaps you are looking for ideas, contacts and resources for a service learning project. Or maybe you are a concerned off-campus student living in one of Burlington’s many neighborhoods. If any of these descriptions fit you, then come to the Community Coalition’s second annual Common Ground Summit on Saturday January 22nd, from 11am to 3pm at Billings on the UVM campus. To register for the conference and your meal preference, please fill out the Doodle poll by Thursday, January 20. To request accommodations please email Alicia.Taylor@uvm.edu or call 656-9405.

The event is a forum for Burlington residents; UVM and Champlain students, staff, and faculty; and City Common Ground Summitofficials and staff members to meet one another and discuss issues within the city and its neighborhoods and then
put those words into a plan of action
. Come and learn about grant opportunities for neighborhood projects as well as ongoing efforts aimed at improving the city’s cultural climate—such as a trash-pickup pilot project that involved UVM Environmental Studies students and a community gardening program seeking to include off-campus students.

“The Summit showed me that I shouldn’t feel that my voice is not important just because I am not a resident,” said one participant following last year’s summit. So even if you are an out-of-state stuCommon Ground Summitdent, new to the city, or unfamiliar
with the Community Coalition, you are still an integral part of Burlington! A student who attended last year’s summit said, “it was exciting and informative to meet Burlington City members face to face. This is something that students do not have a chance to do very often. I found it to be an awesome experience.” So come and establish valuable contacts with community partners. Enjoy a free lunch and a positive and proactive dialogue. Then learn how you can put words into action through a variety of existing opportunities, or craft your own, that will reward you with experience and access to a greater network of individuals in Burlington. As one attendee of the summit said last year: “I think some community members would be surprised at the number of partners they have.”

To register for the conference and your meal preference, please fill out the Doodle poll  by Thursday, January 20.To request accommodations please email Alicia.Taylor@uvm.edu or call 656-9405.  We look forward to your participation!

The Community Coalition is a diverse group of UVM students and administrators, Champlain College administrators, City Hall staff, City Councilors, police, neighborhood representatives, and landlords who meet regularly to create ideas and programs designed to build community and facilitate positive interaction between the university’s students and city residents. The Coalition is an initiative of UVM’s Student Government Association and the UVM Office of Student and Community Relations. Meetings are open to all and participation is heartily welcomed.
