BRADENTON, Fla. -- Senior Kyle
Henry (Brattleboro, Vt.) hurled seven and a third strong innings as
Vermont topped IPFW, 6-3, in college baseball Wednesday afternoon at
Manatee Community College. UVM (2-5) won for the second time in its first
four games of its spring break trip to Bradenton, Fla.
Henry (1-0) won in his first start this season after a pair of relief outings. He allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out four. Tom Kelly (Milton, Mass.) pitched out of trouble in the eighth and freshman Matt Duffy (Milton, Mass.) came in from shortstop to close out the Mastadons (1-8) striking out two in a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.
The Catamounts scored two in the top of the first and led 6-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth before holding on for the win. Vermont played did not make an error and Henry was aided by double plays in the first two innings.
UVM out-hit IPFW, 13-8, as Ethan Paquette (West Burke, Vt.) went 3-for-3 with RBI, and Miguel Magrass (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Duffy each went 2-for-4. Jeff Nolet (Concord, Mass.) also drove in a pair of runs. Justin Milo (Edina, Minn.) stroked his third triple of the young season and Kyle Massie (Rutland, Vt.) doubled as every player in the Vermont lineup had at least one base hit.
Paquette is off to a great start to his sophomore season and leads the Cats with a .391 average. Duffy has now hit safely in his first seven collegiate games and is second the team with a .367 average.
Vermont js back in action taking on Bucknell Thursday at 2:30pm at Manatee Community College in Bradenton.
