Soyuz: The Research Network for Postsocialist Studies

Page date:16.02.06

Soyuz is an Interest Group of the American Anthropological Association. It was formed in 1993 by Majorie Mandelstam Balzer, Bruce Grant, Nancy Ries, Catherine Wanner and other anthropologists who wanted to extend professional ties to a larger group of colleagues around the world. Most Soyuz members have an interest in cultural studies, and that is the focus of the annual symposium in the United States, but all scholars with an interest in qualitative research on social life in Eurasia and other (post)socialist areas are welcome to join our network.

By-Laws for the group were officially passed by a unanimous vote on December 2, 2005.

Seed funding from the Social Science Research Council, The International Research Exchange Board (IREX), and The American Council of Learned Societies was instrumental in launching Soyuz as an organization. Since 2006, H-Net has hosted the Soyuz listserv.
