Integrating Technology into Higher Education Coursework

Essential Conditions

Technology integration can only be successful when certain essential conditions exist.  If these conditions are absent, integration of technology in courses will be sporadic and little systemic change will occur.  As faculty begin the process of learning and using information technology, they should recognize their contribution to a shared vision for learning.  They should have professional development opportunities to support their efforts, and they and their students must have access to computers and communications technologies that permit new innovations to flourish.
Quest 2: Assessing the Conditions

Consider each of the conditions listed below.  What evidence can you find that support the efforts you plan to take with integrating technology into future courses?

Is there a shared vision for integrating technology within your department?  Where is this vision articulated?

Is there strong support from administrators? Where is this support visible? What money is allocated to information technology in the budget? Do administrators model the use of information technology for faculty?

Does a curriculum map exist that illustrates technology competencies that students experience in coursework?

How many courses involve the use of information technology?  Is there one required course, or is technology integrated/modeled in all coursework?

How are student competencies in information technology assessed?

Is information technology a required component of student teaching?

Do field-experiences provide effective models of information technology to support student learning?
