BANNER 4.x Summary for people already using GUI
BANNER 4.x is not that different for people already using GUI. Nuances between the
two versions are listed.
- There are no buttons at the bottom of the forms.
- The 'commands' such as Next Block, Rollback, etc can be done 3 ways. Note, this
is also true in the current GUI.
- Click on the icon at the top of the page.
If you are not sure what the icons mean, placing your cursor on the icon will cause
the name of the command to display.
- Use the drop down menus at the top of the page. For example, click on 'Block' and
then 'Next' to execute the Next Block command.
- Use the keyboard commands. See the
BANNER Keyboard Mapping list (or click on the
'show keys' icon.
- You can access the forms in 4 ways:
- If you know the name of the form (eg, SGAADVR), enter that name in the box labeled
Direct Access and press ENTER.
- Use the menus. To get the Student Menu you are familiar with, open the drop down
box in the upper left, where the words 'Business Process Menu' display. Select 'Products
Menu'. Then click on 'Student System Menu' on the left side of the form. Continue to click
on the left side until you see the form you desire on the right side of the screen. Then
click the form on the right side of the screen OR
Click on 'Products Menu' on the left side of the screen, then
click on 'Student System Menu'.
- BANNER remembers the last 10 forms you have accessed. If you click on 'File' at the
top of the screen, the last 10 forms you have accessed will display at the bottom. You
can click on one of those forms and you will be taken to it.
- If you know the name of the form, click 'File', then 'Object Search' and enter the name
of the form. Press F8, and then Start. This method is useful if you are in form 1, and
want to navigate to form 2. When you are done in form 2, pressing EXIT will return you
to form 1.
- The menus on the main page behave as follows:
- Click on the title/folder on the left side. The contents of that folder will
display on the right side.
- To open a folder on the left side, click on it.
- If a file on the left side is open, clicking on it again will close it.
- When you close a folder on the left side, the right side does not 'refresh'. The
right side is only refreshed when a new folder is opened.
- The buttons that used to appear at the bottom of the window to take you to additional
data are now displayed as text at the left of the window in an area labeled 'Options'.
The Options area contains links to windows where data may be entered, and also contains
links to related forms. It is a combination of the window buttons and Options Menu that
exist in the current GUI. If the up and down arrows are highlighted in the Options
window, that means all the items cannot display. Use the scroll bar to see the end of the
list.
- When a field name is blue, a search can be done in that field.
- If you do not know the code value at all, just double click
in the field, and the list of possible values will display. Highlight the value you
want, click OK, and it will be returned.
- If you know part of the code, enter the partial code followed by a %. Press
ENTER . The list with the information you entered will display. Highlight the value
you want, click OK, and it will be returned. For example, if you enter B% and press
ENTER in the major field, only major codes beginning with B will display.
- When there is a flashlight by a field, that means a more comprehensive form will
be displayed when you do a search. Click on the flashlight, perform the search, and select
the desired value.
- A steering wheel icon indicates Maintenance such as Copy/End can be done. Click on
the icon to perform the desired task. Two common locations for this icon are SGAADVR
and SGASADD. The functionality of Copy/End is the same as the current version of BANNER.
- Icons that look like pieces of paper indicate data are behind them. If the icon
has lines on it, that means data are present. If the icon just has a bar on it, that means
data are not present. The best examples of this are the primary and secondary curriculum
icons on SGASTDN.
- If you do not know the id of a person, you can tab to the name field and do the
name search there (rather than clicking on the flashlight). Enter the partial name with
% just as you would do in a normal name search and press ENTER . A quick name search
will be done. A popup window will display the number of hits. You can click on the drop
down menu to get the list. In this list, name/id changes are indented. Unfortunately,
this list is not alphabetized. For this reason, we don't find it particularly useful.
Our experience is it is faster in the long run to just click on the flashlight and do a
normal name search when you do not know an id.
Changes in Form Behavior
- SHATERM: you have to enter a Start Term value or you'll get an
error message: Invalid Code; press LIST for valid codes. Just enter
000000. The value doesn't matter (as long as it is a valid term).
This is on SCT's 'fixit list', but it isn't fixed yet.
