About the Health & Wellness RLC

The Health & Wellness Residential Learning Community (HWRLC) is now in its third year and, while growing, still has a wonderful community feel. Located within the Christie/Wright/Patterson residential complex, all of our programming spaces are on the first floor, while our residential spaces are located on the second, third and fourth floors with fabulous views of the mountains. Programming spaces include a demonstration kitchen for cooking classes and hosting community get-togethers, a yoga/meditation/exercise space, discounted access to the Wright Fitness Center, a classroom/group room, and administrative offices for faculty, staff and work-study students.

HWRLC students represent a wide variety of academic majors, yet share a common interest in healthy lifestyle choices. Participation in the HWRLC provides the opportunity for students to live together in a setting where faculty, staff and students work collaboratively to promote and support personal and academic growth.

There are several levels of engagement available for HWRLC students. All first-time HWRLC students participate in a one-credit course on the six (6) domains of health and wellness (physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social and environmental). During your second semester, you can also take an HWRLC Leadership course. Using that first year experience as a foundation, students who wish to live in the HWRLC in subsequent years will continue to build upon their personal areas of interest, as well as contribute to the development of a larger community grounded in the principles of health and wellness.

HWRLC members actively participate in a variety of activities based on their interest areas and class schedules. Examples of recent activities include: a moonlight hike up Stowe Pinnacle with a picnic atop the mountain; cross country skiing; rock climbing; camping; yoga and meditation practices; cooking and nutrition classes; and many other exciting options.

HWRLC members are encouraged to get involved and to build leadership skills through development of programming in their particular areas of interest. Students can submit programming ideas and proposals to the HWRLC to help us enhance our program offerings. Groups of students are currently working on the following initiatives:

  • Community Service
  • Fitness
  • Food Appreciation
  • Health Education
  • Marketing and Promotion of the HWRLC
  • Outdoor Experiences

Through the HWRLC experience, students will have the opportunity to:

  1. Identify, understand, and incorporate into their lifestyle, a personal definition of wellness that integrates all six domains of health and wellbeing;
  2. Understand the impact and ramifications of lifestyle choices from both a personal and community/societal perspective;
  3. Develop/increase awareness of the influence that societal mores and values have on individual lifestyle choices and accepted norms;
  4. Explore health and wellbeing from multiple and diverse perspectives; and internalize how different experiences, perspectives and perceptions influence attitudes, values, and choices regarding health and wellbeing;
  5. Demonstrate leadership, involvement, and activism through shared personal and educational experiences;
  6. Invest in a broad range of integrated, interdisciplinary forums to facilitate the development of a variety of strategies that promote healthy lifestyle choices for self, community, society, and beyond.

How to apply

Admission to the HWRLC is by application only. The application deadline for returning students is March 6, 2009; the application deadline for newly admitted first-year and transfer students is June 30, 2009.
