LANE SERIES - Nano Stern

Time: 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Location: UVM Recital Hall
Description: “[Nano] may be the best young Chilean songwriter of his generation. With his lyrics, melodies, message, delivery, humor and heart, he gets my vote.” – Joan Baez

Our audience can expect a truly gorgeous voice and moving original songs sung in Spanish from the amazing Chilean singer-songwriter, Nano Stern. The grandson of Jewish refugees who fled persecution, Nano had a childhood vividly painted not only by his family’s activism and musicianship, but also by the powerful legacy of the Nueva Canción movement led by Chilean musical activists during Pinochet’s dictatorship a generation before. Legends like Inti-Illimani and Victor Jara inspire Nano’s sound. “I am extremely respectful of the tradition,” explains Stern, “It is an enormous gift we received from the people of the past.”

LANE SERIES - Lise de la Salle

Time: 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Location: UVM Recital Hall
Description: “De la Salle played so well that, for music of the concert, the audience had to remember to breathe…the exhilaration didn’t let up for a second until her hands came off the keyboard and everyone could finally come up for air.” – The Washington Post

Over the course of just a couple of years, Lise de la Salle has established a reputation as one of today’s most exciting young artists and also as a musician of uncommon sensibility and maturity. The 26-year-old French pianist began her studies at age four, gave her first concert at age nine on a live broadcast on Radio-France, and entered the Paris Conservatory at age eleven. She won the European Young Concert Artists Auditions in Paris in 2003 and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York in 2004. She has performed for enthusiastic audiences on major series from Washington D.C., New York, and Montreal, to Berlin, London, and Paris. She has also appeared with such major orchestras as the London, Chicago, Boston, and Vienna Symphonies. For her appearance on the Lane Series, Lise will be performing Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit and Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Handel along with works by Bach and Debussy.

LANE SERIES - The Shanghai Quartet with Wu Man, pipa

Time: 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Location: UVM Recital Hall
Description: LANE SERIES - The Shanghai Quartet with Wu Man, pipa: When we were given the opportunity to bring The Shanghai Quartet, a Lane Series favorite, along with world-renowned pipa player Wu Man to the Lane Stage, we absolutely had to accept. The Shanghai Quartet has a long history of championing the juxtaposition of Eastern and Western musical traditions, and Wu Man is credited with bringing this beautiful instrument to the Western World – in fact, she is the first individual ever to have earned a Master’s degree in pipa performance, which she received at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Together, they will present a new multi-media work by the eminent Chinese composer Zhao Jiping (who scored the music for Raise the Red Lantern, To Live, and Farewell My Concubine). The program will also include Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 11, Op. 95 in F minor, works for solo pipa, and a traditional Chinese folk song arranged for pipa and string quartet by Shanghai Quartet violinist, Yi-Wen Jiang.

Please join us for a pre-concert talk at 6:30pm in the UVM Recital Hall.

Limited number of free tickets for Global Village students. Watch for sign-ups in the Living/Learning Director's Office (205 Commons) this Fall!
