Pinnacle Studio is a Window's Operating System based solution for digital video editing and creation. You will need a camera that can take digital video (dv), preferably an iEEE 1394 (or Firewire) connection on the camera and computer, and enough hard drive space to store captured video. Raw digital video will consume a great deal of space on your hard drive.  You will need a 300 or faster CPU(Pentium 2 and up), 128 MB RAM, Windows 98 Second Edition, and 200 MB of harddrive space for installation.  You will use 128 MB of hard drive space for every 20 minutes of preview quality video that is captured.  Here are some basic features of the program:
  • Connect your camera to your computer using the iEEE 1394 cord (usually sold separately from machines). The iEEE 1394 wire outputs video and audio to another source, all in one cord.  Each camera and computer are different, but most will indicate the necessary ports by a "dv" or 1394 icon.
  • Turn your camera to the "Play" or "VCR" mode
  • Double click on the Pinnacle Studio 7.0 icon on your desktop (or once in your Programs folder)
  • You will see this dialogue box appear:
  • You can control your camera directly from this interface.  Click the play, rewind, fast forward, stop, and pause buttons on the camera icon to cue your tape.
  • The view finder in the upper right hand corner of the interface will display the video footage.  At this point, you are only viewing your film footage from the camera.

Step 1: Capturing Video
  • After cueing your video to a point where you wish to capture (or download) your video on your computer's hard drive, click the green Start Capture button in the lower right portion of the interface.
  • Pinnacle will prompt you to name the capture video piece.  Any name that will delineate the particular captured video from others will do.
  • Click Start Capture and you will see a small video frame appear in your Album(upper left area of the interface).  The Album stores your captured video for editing later.
  • Click Stop Capture when you have the desired footage in the Album.
  • You have now "downloaded" your video footage onto your computer!  The original footage remains on the tape, so what you have is an exact copy of the video that is now stored on your computer's hard drive.  Now you are ready to Edit

Step 2: Editing Video
  • To begin editing, click on the editing tab at the top of the interface (as pictured below).
  • In the editing view, you will see your captured video clips in the album.  You can choose other captured clips by clicking once on the drop down menu above the clip image in the album.
  • You can play, rewind, fast forward, and cue your clip using the viewer to the right of the album.
  • When you are ready to manipulate the clip, click and drag in down to the timeline (as indicated by the red line above). Release it on the line next to the camera icon.
  • If you do not see the timeline view, click once on the View menu and choose Timeline.
  • Double click on the clip in the timeline and a new menu will appear above.

  • You will notice two crop marks below the selected clip (highlight above).
  • Click and drag the crop marks to the up and down the bar.  Moving the first mark from left to right will crop footage off the beginning of the clip, and the second (right mark) from left to right will crop the end of the clip.
  • Pinnacle Studio will automatically adjust the clip in in the timeline as it is manipulated.
  • You can also choose any of the other buttons to the left of the clip in the edit viewer (As show and highlighted below for color adjustment)

*move the sliders to adjust color, brightness, etc.  Also, you can choose black and white or other options from the white drop down menu.*

Screen Grab
  • To Grab a still image of your video, click on the Video Tool Box and select the Grab icon (as highlighted below)
  • Move your video footage to the frame which you would like to grab
  • Click on the Grab button
  • If you are ready to add the still frame to your movie, click on the Add to Movie button
  • If you would to save it, click the Save to Disk button, and Pinnacle will prompt you to select a folder for saving.
Split a Video Clip
  • To split a longer clip into individual clips, move the playhead across the clip on the timeline so that it is positioned at the desired splitting point.
  • Right click on the clip and choose Split Clip
  • You will see the clip is split into two separate clips on your timeline

Titles
  • You can also add custom titles to your movie.
  • In the Edit View, click on the T below the scissors icon:
  • Move the Playhead to the area of the Timeline where you wish the title to be placed in your movie. You can either choose Title Overlay or Full Screen Title.   Title Overlay play the text over the video image.  Full Screen Title will place it over a desired background.
  • A Title Deko window will appear where you can create your title in the same format as a word processor.
  • Choose a font, size, or format and type your text.
  • Choose  Set Background under the File menu to put it over black or an image
  • When finished, choose Accept title, return to studio from the File menu.
  • Your title will be placed where your Playhead is located on your Timeline (below the edit view)

Adding Transitions
  • Close the Edit view after you have customized your clip by clicking on the X in the upper right hand corner of the dialogue box (**do not click on the X in the upper right hand corner of the entire interface, this will close Pinnacle Studio).
  • Choose the Transition tab on the side of your album (below the clip viewer).
  • Transitions with link your clips together more smoothly as the play through in your movie.
  • Choose a transition that meets your needs.
  • You can preview the transition in the adjacent window.
  • Click and drag the transition icon in between clips on the timeline.

Adding Music
  • You can add sound effects to your movie by clicking on the speaker tab on your album.
  • Click and drag the sound effect icon down to the desired area of the speaker line on the timeline
  • To add music from a CD, click on the small speaker at the top of the timeline (as highlighted below)
  • Set your Playhead to the desired area on the timeline where you would like your music track to begin.
  • Choose the track you would like and click the Add to Movie button.
  • It will be added to the music line on the timeline.

You are now ready to play your movie and make any last adjustments.  Close the sound view and click the cue button below the clip viewer.  You will see all your additions and changes appear in a cohesive movie!

Step 3: Make Movie
  • Now you are ready to save your movie in a format that is readable by other computers.
  • Choices are (Back to) Tape, AVI, MPEG, Stream, and Share.
  • Click on the button that meets your needs.  Both platforms (Windows and Mac) can view an MPEG file.  So if you are creating a movie for the web, MPEG is preferred.
  • Click on the green Create MPEG file when you are ready.
  • Pinnacle will prompt you to name the file.  Preferably a title with all lower case letters, no spaces, and the .mpg file extension will be compatible for web use.
  • See the Netscape 7.0 handout for instructions on how to insert video into a web page.
