Goals/Project Description:
Development of Barb Sclafani's class web site to illustrate
writing standards covered in second grade.
Barb Sclafani participated in a 2001 UVM summer course on electronic
portfolios. During this time, she created a template for a class
web page project that would demonstrate student writing standards
at the second grade level. Ms. Sclafani worked with a UVM mentor,
Tara Panigutti, during the Fall semester of 2001 and began to
put these ideas into action. When Greta Geer became her mentor
during the Spring 2002 semester, Mrs. Sclafani was anxious to
continue work on this project. Greta was successful in helping
Mrs. Sclafani achieve this goal.

Bob Abbey and Jen Tremblay
Grade: 3
Mentor:
Kristen Scrivens
(Spring 2002)
|
Goals/Project Description:
The 2002 Winter Olympics were underway when Kristen began work
at Flynn Elementary. At the same time, students in Bob
Abbey’s
third grade class were involved in an Olympics event of their
own at Flynn Elementary School.
Mr. Abbey asked Kristen to help him develop
a site that documented the school's Olympic events
at Flynn, the Flyyn Olympics. With Kristen's
helps, student designed web pages sections to
document the Flynn Olympics. She also helped
students develop of their class web page.
Kristen created the template for the Flynn Olympics
site and worked with small groups of students
after school to create other areas of their class
web site. Mr. Abbey asked his students to write
biographies for the class site, and to create
a page called About Our Teacher. Mr. Abbey's
goal was to encourage his students to assume
ownership in the design and content of the class
web site. During the Spring 2002 semester, Kristen
also worked with Jan Tremblay's students during
computer lab time. Mrs. Tremblay's students developed
a web page about themselves using a template
that Kristen helped design.

Mary Dee
Grade: 4
Mentor:
Allison Devoe
(Fall 2001)
 |
Project Goals/Description:
Mary Dee, a grade four-five classroom teacher at Flynn Elementary, wanted
to take the introductory web page skills she learned in a summer
PT3 workshop on electronic portfolios and apply them by developing
a web site that outlined the PASS science assessment curriculum
for grades K-5. Allison DeVoe was hired as a mentor to assist
Ms. Dee with this project. During the semester, Allison helped
Ms. Dee scan information and link each grade level assessment to
her web site. Allison helped her create .html files and link them
together. Mary Dee hopes that from this framework, each grade
level teacher will embellish the standards with examples of teacher
lesson plans that meet these standards.

| Orchard
School
Teachers:
Donna Sullivan
MacDonald
Denise Haggerty
Dale Wright
Grades:
Media Center, 1, 5
Mentor:
Ashley Steele
(Spring 2002)

|
Goals/Project Description:
Several teachers at Orchard School indicated an interest to
work with a UVM student mentor during the 2002 spring semester. Teachers
expressed a variety of needs. Donna Sullivan MacDonald, the school's
librarian, manages a mini-lab of computers in the library. Ms.
MacDonald collaborates daily with teachers concerning technology
applications to support units of study and requested a mentor
to help with requests that range from Internet searches to
creating
HyperStudio projects for student presentations.
Denise Haggerty, a grade one teacher, expressed
an interest in learning more about how technology
can be used at a first grade level. She also
wanted to develop a class web page that linked
to the school's home page. Ashley worked with
Denise to develop this web site. Ashley helped
to teach Denise how to take digital pictures,
to scan student drawings, and to create a class
web site using these products.
Dale Wright, a fifth grade teacher, expressed
a desire for students to create their own web
sites on topics being covered in class. With
Ashley's assistance, Mr. Wright was able to send
small groups of students to the media center
to create topic-specific sites that provided
resources for the entire class to use. Ashley
taught students how to create these pages, how
to insert images (especially animated gifs),
and to create hyperlinks to reference sites.

Middle School
Teacher:
Earle Dunphy
Grades:
6-8
Speech Language
Mentor:
Shannon Smith
(Spring 2002)

|
Goals/Project Description:
Mr. Dunphy, the speech language educator at Edmunds Middle
School, was interested in developing a special education
web site that
was especially designed for classroom teachers. Mr. Dunphy
had acquired some basic web page skills, but needed a mentor
to help
him realize his ideas.
Shannon Smith, a PT3 Student Mentor, and Mr.
Dunphy met regularly each week for approximately
two hours to develop a web compendium of special
education resources. Shannon helped Mr. Dunphy
create a site design and template to help Mr.
Dunphy maintain the site on his own.
Mr. Dunphy and Shannon investigated background
images, animated gifs and other graphics to enhance
the visual appeal of the site. Mr. Dunphy reviewed
Internet resources and Shannon assisted him in
creating links to these resources.

Middle School
Teacher:
Monique Martin
Grades:
7-8
French
Mentor:
Kyler Bland
(Spring 2002)

|
Goals/Project Description:
Monique Martin, French teacher for grades seven and eight,
was interested in developing a project that would engage
students in studying
French using internet resources. She envisioned creating a "virtual
museum" web site that showcased art from around the world and requested
a mentor to help her with this project. Ms. Martin also wanted
to use technology more actively in her classes, especially
in creating travel brochures to French speaking countries.
With the assistance of Kyler Bland, Ms. Martin
was able to accomplish the second goal -- using
Internet resources to support classroom projects. Kyler
offered to create a webquest that offered facts
and information about French-speaking countries. Kyler
assisted students when they worked in the computer
lab that adjoined their classroom on other Internet
research assignments. The concept of the virtual
museum is still one of Ms. Martin's dreams, but
is on hold for now.

| Chamberlin
School
Teacher:
Maureen Caruso
Grade: 2
Mentor:
Natasha Norins
(Fall 2001)
Emmy Brolyer
(Spring 2002)
|
Goals/Project Description:
Maureen Caruso requested a student mentor to help her learn
how to integrate technology with her second grade students
and to help
her develop a class web page that would show case her students'
work. During the fall semester, Natasha Norins assisted Ms. Caruso
to achieve her goals. With Natasha's help, Ms. Caruso introduced
students to basic use of the computer during their scheduled computer
lab time. Students learned how to log in to the network and to
create documents in Microsoft Word. They also began to do research
using the Internet. Natasha taught the students how to use
drawing tools to illustrate their ideas.
As the second semester progressed, Emmy Brolyer
continued the work that Natasha had begun while
Natasha shifted her role in the classroom from
student mentor to student teacher. Both Natasha
and Emmy worked together to introduce students
to basic computer use and concepts. Their projects
included a HyperStudio stack on all 50 states
that the students helped to develop and they
learned how to do a webquest for Internet searching.
Outside of class time, both Natasha and Emmy
helped Ms. Caruso learn to create web pages. Ms.
Caruso is currently teaching at Central School.

Teacher:
Kristen Carlson
Grade: 4
Mentor:
Emily Mock
(Spring 2002)

|
Goals/Project Description:
Kristin Carlson taught fourth grade at Central School and requested
a mentor to help her work with students to put their work online
and link it to the class home page. Emily worked for approximately
3 hours per week helping Ms. Carlson with class web page work. Initially,
they attempted to take the class to the computer lab to work
as a large group on individual web pages. This strategy, however,
did not work well because this is a very high-energy class, populated
by more boys than girls, and students were too excitable in the
lab. Ms. Carlson and Emily realized that working in small groups
of 3 students in the classroom was a better approach, and they
were able to accomplish more in this setting.
Emily developed a set of web links for the class web page that
Ms. Carlson created. She researched web resources and established
the Fun Links section of the web page. This page includes links
for math, science, and literacy. In addition, Emily works with
small groups to help students write about the kinds of academic
activities are happening in the class.

| South
Burlington High School
Teacher:
Maritza Valencia
Grade/Subject:
Spanish
Mentor:
Emma Waldo
(Spring 2002)

|
Goals/Project Description:
Emma Waldo was a secondary education student with a concentration
in Spanish. This placement was unique in that Emma was able
to work with the Spanish teacher at South Burlington High School,
Maritza Valencia. Ms. Valencia was thrilled to have a mentor
who could speak Spanish and who could understand her Spanish
instructions spoken in class to her senior Spanish students.
Prior to Emma’s arrival, Ms. Valencia had already started
a web page to support her AP Spanish class. She was looking
for assistance in entering student work online. Ms. Valencia
reviews the student work, makes corrections, and posts the student’s
responses online. Emma would then take these files, convert
them to HTML and upload them to the web site. Due to new AP
Spanish requirements, Ms. Valencia asked Emma to help her design
her web site.
Emma also introduced fifth year Spanish students to HyperStudio. Originally,
Ms. Valenica had planned to use Powerpoint for student presentations,
but was influenced by Emma to look at HyperStudio as an alternative
presentation software tool. Emma successfully taught students
how to use HyperStudio to complete an assignment given by Ms.
Valencia.
In support of a trip Ms. Valencia was taking to Spain in late
April, Emma developed a design for a web site to document this
trip. Emma and Ms. Valencia worked collaboratively to consider
the design and format of this new site.
Emma also worked after school hours with Curt Belton. Mr. Belton
teaches science and was interested in developing his own web
site. With Emma's assistance, he has learned how to use a scanner
to import images for his site. Emma supported Mr. Belton in
learning these new tools and in developing a new site for his
class (not yet online for review).
