Biographical Sketch

Dr. Michael J. Zvolensky received his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from West Virginia University in 2001. He currently is Richard and Pamela Ader Green and Gold Distinguished Full Professor in the Department of Psychology at The University of Vermont (UVM) and Director of the Anxiety and Health Research Laboratory and Clinic. Dr. Zvolensky’s research program cuts across basic and applied work in the area of anxiety disorders. Specifically, his work is principally focused on examining vulnerability processes involved with the onset and maintenance of these disorders. In pursuit of this knowledge, he uses two interrelated and convergent research approaches: one is basic research on emotional vulnerability and the second is clinical extensions of that basic research in the form of theoretically-driven psychosocial interventions strategies. He has been especially involved in better understanding the role of cigarette smoking in terms of the etiology and maintenance of panic psychopathology, and at the same time, the role panic vulnerability factors may play in smoking cessation. This work has broadly informed the study of the co-occurrence of anxiety and addictive disorders. Dr. Zvolensky has published over 200 scientific articles and received a variety of early contribution to the field awards from professional organizations. He has obtained over 5 million dollars in extramural funding for his work and been continuously funded since arriving to UVM.
