Biography: James M. Jeffords

United States Senator

Senator Jeffords spent 32 years in Congress. First elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1974, he retired in 2006 after serving his third term as a U.S. Senator. Senator Jeffords served as a Vermont State Senator for Rutland County in 1967 and 1968, and held his first statewide office as Vermont Attorney General from 1969 to 1973. Throughout his tenure in Congress, Senator Jeffords championed legislation to strengthen our nation's education system and increase the opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Senator Jeffords has received many awards, including the Spirit of Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National School Boards Association Legislator of the Year Award, and the Martha Ziegler’s Founders Award from the Federation for Children with Special Needs. He is the author of My Declaration of Independence (Simon and Schuster, 2001) and An Independent Man: Adventures of a Public Servant (Simon and Schuster, 2003). Senator Jeffords received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School.
