Biography: Charles C. J. Carpenter, M.D.

Professor of Medicine, Brown University

Dr. Carpenter has served as a Professor of Medicine at Brown University since 1986 and currently serves as Director of the International Health Institute of Brown University. He was instrumental in the development of technology for life-saving strategies to treat enteric diseases, including oral rehydration solution, which has been credited to saving millions of lives. Dr. Carpenter’s career has been focused on fighting major international health problems, including HIV/AIDS, malaria, and cholera. His work not only includes science research, but also clinical practice, public health, and epidemiology. Since the 1980’s, Dr. Carpenter’s focal point has been on the global AIDS epidemic. In 2003, he was recognized for his efforts as a recipient of the John E. Fogerty International Center Recognition Award for International Health. Throughout his career, Dr. Carpenter has authored over 150 articles, books, and book chapters. Dr. Carpenter received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University and Doctor of Medicine degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
