Burack Distinguished Lecture Series

Dan and Carole Burack President's Distinguished Lecture Series

Current | Previous

In October 2002, President Fogel announced the establishment of the President's Distinguished Lecture Series. Funded by discretionary gift funds, the series brings to our campus distinguished guest speakers who enhance the academic campus experience, showcase our faculty and programs and draw groups of faculty and students together on a regular basis. The first lectures took place during spring semester 2003. Since the establishment of the program in October 2002, over 70 have presented at the University of Vermont drawing large crowds and attracting attention from across the campus. The Faculty Senate Research, Scholarship and Graduate Education Committee serves as the screening committee and selects the speakers from a wide range of highly qualified and diverse nominations.

In the spring of 2005 UVM alumnus, Dan Burack '55, and his wife Carole made a generous gift to the Campaign for the University of Vermont which they designated to endow the lecture series and support undergraduate scholarships. The University renamed the President's Distinguished Lecture Series in the Burack's honor to recognize their philanthropy.

In recent semesters we solicited nominations once a year, but have decided to return to the earlier practice of calling for nominations two times annually – once in the fall semester and once in the spring semester. Hosts will have two semesters to schedule the lecture. The guidelines and nomination form for the President’s Distinguished Lecture Series for Academic Year 2009-2010 are posted on the President’s web page. Please submit nominations to the Provost’s Office, 348 Waterman, to the attention of Gary Derr at Gary.Derr@uvm.edu. The deadline to submit nominations is Friday, October 30, 2009. Please note that we require the form to be signed by the faculty nominator, who will serve as the primary host, and by the Department Chair, indicating departmental support for the nomination. We anticipate funding 10 lectures for fall semester 2009. You will be notified prior to the end of the semester of the committee’s decision.
