The University of Vermont

PLANT BIOLOGY

Undergraduate Program

Courses taught by experts in their field
Full professors teach courses at all levels, from introductory to advanced. While graduate students may assist professors in preparation for laboratory work or fieldtrips, all classes are taught by professors.

Broad education in the life sciences
from biochemistry and molecular biology to whole plant physiology to ecosystem ecology
Individualized attention
After a few first-year introductory classes with 100-200 students, class size rapidly decreases to 5-40 students in upper-level offerings. Labs and fieldtrips are always divided into small groups of students (15 or fewer).

Hands-on research
Students may join a department laboratory and engage in research under the direction of a faculty member and alongside graduate students.

Degree Programs

Bachelor of Science in Plant Biology
(College of Agriculture and Life Sciences)

Bachelor of Arts in Plant Biology
(College of Arts and Sciences)

  • Concentrations*:
  • General Plant Biology
  • Ecology and Evolutionary Biology of Plants
  • Plant Molecular Biology

*Students interested in other specialized areas of Plant Biology (such as Ethnobotany, for example) may use self-designed majors to develop an appropriate program of study.

Course Offerings

The great variety of courses offered allows students to master subdisciplines within plant biology, such as ecology, genetics, growth and development, physiology, and evolution.
