Graduate Program

UVM's graduate program in Plant Biology combines the intimacy of a small academic department with all the advantages of a major research university. Students entering the department join a small, close-knit community of faculty and fellow students who are enthused by UVM's culture of scientific inquiry and lifelong learning.

Plant Biology Programs

Graduate student working in a lab.The Plant Biology Department offers both M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs. Graduate students usually specialize in either Ecology and Evolutionary Biology or Cell and Molecular Biology, but that distinction is not absolute. M.S. and Ph.D. programs are tailored to the specific needs of each individual student, in consultation with the student's faculty advisor and graduate studies committee. Field Naturalist Program

Field Naturalist students examine leaves in the field.The Plant Biology Department offers a multidisciplinary non-thesis program leading to the degree of Master of Science, Field Naturalist Option. Enrollment is limited to a small number of mature, highly talented individuals who have demonstrated sustained interest in field aspects of the natural sciences. The Field Naturalist Program develops the potential of tomorrow's conservation leaders by emphasizing scientific integration, oral and written communication, and environmental problem-solving.
