Honors Day 2008

Alexander Gershoy Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship award was established in the memory of the renowned UVM Botanist Alexander Gershoy and is presented to a deserving undergraduate or graduate student in Botany who demonstrates research excellence in the fields of Cell Biology or Genetics.


Thomas Sproston Undergraduate Student Research Fund

Established in memory of the distinguished UVM mycologist Thomas Sproston, this fund is to benefit students majoring in the botanical sciences, especially plant pathology. Funds are used to support student research projects deemed of high academic merit.


Award for Outstanding Teaching by a Graduate Student

This award is presented each year to a Graduate Teaching Assistant for excellent teaching of undergraduate students.

McCormick Scholarship

This scholarship, established by longtime supporters of the Field Naturalist Program John and Bird McCormick, is awarded annually to an outstanding Field Naturalist student.

The 2006 recipient of the McCormick Scholarship was Monica Erhart. Her leadership in the Field Naturalist Program and her facility for teaching undergraduates made her a deserving candidate for this award. Click here to learn more about Monica.

Award for Superior Performance in Research

This award is presented to an undergraduate student, irrespective of the student's major, who is doing outstanding research in the Botany Department.

Michael Weadick, a Biochemistry Major working in Mary Tierney's Lab in the Plant Biology Department, receives the Award for Superior Performance in Research from Botany Department Chair, Thomas Vogelmann at the 2006 Honors Day ceremony.

Award for Superior Performance in Botany

The faculty in Botany present this award each year to a senoir (or seniors) in the department with a superior academic record and investment in the research and teaching activities of the department.

Lisa Weiss, who was unable to attend the Honors Day Ceremony, was the 2006 recipient of the Superior Performance in Botany award.

Lewis Ralph Jones Award

This award is given to a student in recognition of academic excellence in the Plant Sciences. It is a cross-departmental award, with one recipient chosen from Plant & Soil Science, Forestry, and Plant Biology.

David Steakley accepts the Lewis Ralph Jones Award from his research advisor, Dr. David Barrington, at the 2007 Honors Day ceremony.
