Iowa Pilot-testing

Winrock International is working with Iowa State Extension on designing performance-based incentives in the Shell Rock, Cedar, and Maquoketa watersheds in Iowa (see map below).

Currently, we are in Phase I of the project in Iowa. During Phase I project leaders and farmers are working together to determine the environmental performance goals using the Phosphorus Index and Soil Conditioning Index.

Some of the methods for improving the index scores and reducing the risk of phosphorus lost from the farm include: contouring, riparian buffers, reduced tillage or no-till, terraces, more forage in rotation, cover crops after tillage, and adjusting the rates and method of manure application.
