The Engaged Scholarship Expenses Fund

About the Fund

The CUPS office realizes that service-learning and community-based research are activities that sometimes require resources above and beyond that of a normal course. While our Faculty Implementation Grant Program provides funding for first-time initiatives, we also realize that expenses continue as your work continues. In response to this need, we have created the Engaged Scholarship Expenses Fund.  This fund accepts applications, on a rolling basis, for ongoing expenses (up to $250) associated with service-learning and/or community-based research at the University of Vermont.

How to Apply

Applications are accepted at any time of the year.  Please allow a minimum of 3 weeks to process your request. Applications should be 1-2 pages and should include: contact information, a description of the project for which you are applying for funding, a description of your community partner, and a detailed budget not to exceed $250.

Please send applications to:

Engaged Scholarship Expenses Fund
CUPS
409 Billings Center, 48 University Place

or e-mail applications to: partnerships@uvm.edu

Limitations/Regulations

  • Applications are only accepted from faculty or from student/community members with faculty sponsorship.
  • Only one application per course per semester.
  • Faculty are limited to three (3) awards from the expense fund. After that time, we expect that you will pursue institutionalized support from your department.
  • Funding is awarded on a first-come first-served basis and there is a limited amount of funding available each semester. We may delay your application if funding has been expended for that time period.
  • Applications should clearly explain the impact of the project for community partners.
  • Funding may not be used for faculty time (per union guidelines) or TA services (due to the existence of our separate TA program).

Examples of Expenses

Funding may be used for any cost associated with completion of a service-learning or community-based research project. Examples of potential expenses include:

  • Transportation expenses to a site for students, or to campus for community partners;
  • Materials and supplies to complete a service-learning project;
  • Resources and/or books related to your community-based topic, or for providing content-related materials to partners;
  • Training expenses for students, partners, or faculty associated with skill-building directly related to the project.

If you have questions about qualifiying expenses, please feel free to contact us at 802-656-0095 or partnerships@uvm.edu
