Subject: The UVM Asian Studies Outreach Program is the Recipient of a National International Education Award
From: Dr. Juefei Wang, ASOP Director
Dear Friends,
The Asian Studies Outreach Program of the University of Vermont has been given the inaugural Goldman Sachs Foundation Prize for Excellence in International Education. ASOP is the only winner in the prize category for higher education.
In the evening of November 18, 2003, Dr. Juefei Wang, ASOP Director, received the award. Attending the award ceremony were Secretary of Education Paige, Under Secretary of State Dobriansky, and President Bell-Rose of the Goldman Sachs Foundation.
Ambassador Nicolas Platt, President of Asia Society, presented the award to ASOP. In his introduction, Ambassador Platt indicated that ASOP “is recognized for its work in assisting schools throughout Vermont to introduce the study of Asia into their curriculum and for its effect in inspiring the state of Vermont to examine the needs for international education for all students. … For superior achievement in engaging students, teachers and school administrators in learning about other world regions, cultures and languages, the 2003 Goldman Sachs Foundation Higher Education Prize for Excellence in International Education goes to the University of Vermont Asian Studies Outreach Program.”
In his speech at the award ceremony, Juefei expressed his gratitude to the Goldman Sachs Foundation and Asia Society for promoting international education at the national level, the Freeman Foundation for providing generous, strong support since 1994, the U.S.-Japan Foundation for supporting an ASOP program in Japan, and to “hundreds of Vermont teachers and school administrators who have spared no effort in learning and teaching about Asia. It is their work in schools that counts. This award is for them.”
ASOP takes this opportunity to express its sincere appreciation to Vermont schools and educators. Without their efforts, Vermont would still be isolated from Asia. Together, we can make a difference.
