Unit Title:  Folktales and Story Cloths

Grade Level:   Third and Fourth

Unit Overview:

 This Thai culture unit will include students in a multiage 3/4 team.  Woven through Social Science and Literacy lessons over a five-week span, it will emphasize Thai history, festivals, economics and literature.  Literacy will include ficiton, non-fiction and folktales.

Concurrently, comparisons will be made between Vermont and Thailand, focusing on economics, folktales, weather (as related to economics) and history.  A special strand will include a study of history cloths used by many cultures to relate important events in the lives of the people.


Essential Questions:
  • How can the history of a people be preserved through tales and story cloths?
  • What are some of the similarities and differences between American and Thai cultures, with a focus on children?
 

Culminating Task:
  1. A story cube focusing on one of the Thai tales read.  The six sides will include: title, setting, characters, problem, conclusion and main events;
  2. A memory flag made by each student signifying an important item or event in their lives that they feel would be important to remember as they get older.
