UNIT SUMMARY

Unit Title:Family Life, Elephants and Folk Tales in Thailand

Grade Level: Primary (Grade 2)

Unit Overview:
 This lower primary level unit introduces students to various aspects of Thai culture and life through a range of activities.  Reading comprehension, writing, listening and team work skills are developed as students learn about Thai family life, a Thai festival, the historical significance and role of elephants and the role of folk tales in Thai culture.

Essential Questions:
 How are Thai people like us and how is there culture different?

Culminating Task:
  1.  Student and teacher narrative on elephants published in a bound book;
  2. Student book showing a child's view of how kids and elephants are alike, based on the Red Clover nominee, Elephants Can Paint Too by Katya Arnold;
  3. Elephant clay sculpture;
  4. Illustrations and summaries of folktales;
  5. Final assessment paper showing how the U.S.A. and Thailand are alike and different.

Vital Results:
Standard 1.1 Students use comprehension stragegies while listening to literacy text.
Standard 1.2

Students will listen actively and respond to communications. 

  • Evident when students respond through discussion, writing and using art forms.
Standard 1.9 Students will organize and relate a storyline by creating a clear story with beginning, middle and end.  They will demonstrate use of narrative by using details and identifying characters.
