Japanese Music

Unit Overview:
Students will hear, sing, play and create music in the Yo-sen and In-sen scales.  Students will listen to a variety of music from ancient and modern Japan as well as see and hear traditional instruments.  Through instruciton and activities, students will develop and understanding of the similarities and differences between American and Japanese music.

Essential Questions:
  • How does culture influence music?
  • What are the similarities and differences between American and Japanese music?

Culminating Task:
 Students will compose a piece of music in the Japanese style using either the Yo- or the In- scales.
