Unit Title:

Ancient China During the Reign of the First Emperor Qin

Unit Overview:
The focus of this third grade unit will be on ancient China during the reign of the first Emperor Qin. Students will be aware of the positive and negative impact of Qin's short reign and learn what life was like during this time in Chinese history.

Essential Questions:
 What were the accomplishments and failures of the Qin Emperor and what was life like during his reign?

Culminating Task:

Students will use their imaginations to travel back in time. They will take the knowledge that they have gained and create a travel brochure depicting what life was like during the Qin dynasty.

Parents will be invited to an Open House to share in the learning. Third grade students will need to be able to teach the following information to their parents: show where China is located on a world map; define the concepts ancient and dynasty; explain what BC and AD mean; use our class dragon timeline to show the most important dynasties; explain what an emperor is; introduce Emperor Qin by telling how China got its name; show what part of China Qin ruled and when; point to where the Great Wall of China is located and tell how/why it was built; explain how the rich and poor lived during ancient times; share two additional accomplishments and two failures of Qin.
