GIAC
Vermont : Funded through a generous grant from the Freeman Foundation, GIAC Vermont provides opportunities for participating students to study Chinese culture and other Asian Cultures beyond their school curricula. College professors and Asian nationals conduct workshops or give lectures on various aspects of Asian cultures, such as history, religions, diversity issues, women's roles, and education. Students work in large and small groups and engage in hands-on activities such as painting, calligraphy, and Tai Chi exercise. Group presentations on aspects of Asian cultures are produced by small groups of students. Each student develops a plan for continuous study during the year as preparation for a visit to China in the following year. Only GIAC Vermont students are eligible for the program in China. Follow up activities are organized by GIAC teachers during the year and planning sessions for the visit to China usually begin in late March every year. UVM Lodging: GIAC Vermont students stay on the UVM campus during the program. Two student share one room in one of the dormitory buildings. A typical room has two beds, two chairs, two desks, and closets. Students need to bring pillows and sheets. Because the program is held during the summer, it is wise to bring a fan for the room. Students can either take the campus shuttle or walk with the group to attend classes. Student will have breakfast and lunch in a UVM cafeteria. Dinner is usually ordered from local Asian restaurants.
