Yanapuma foundation is a new and cooperatively-run
organization that works in a participatory manner to promote sustainable
practices in these communities across all major axes; health, education,
sanitation, income development, cultural and environmental protection, etc. Yanapuma Foundation is seeking self-motivated and dedicated
individuals with a strong interest in development and with background knowledge
on GIS to create a map of an indigenous community.
This particular project involves the creation
of an electronic map of an indigenous community, with the purpose of assisting
the community in its development process. Tasks involve: determine land borders
by walking around the community and going house-by-house to speak with
community members, registering the information with the GIS system and creating
the final product of an (electronic) map of the community through GIS software
(ArcGIS)
This post offers a great opportunity to get
first-hand experience of community development at the grassroots level and to
develop professionally and personally.
Minimum commitment is 3 months and a good intermediate level of Spanish is
required. For this internship it is essential that the intern knows how to use
GIS and related software. Internship/volunteer set-up fee is a one-time $75.00
payment to Yanapuma. Interns are responsible for their own travel costs,
accommodation, food, and general expenses. Generally they will pay the
community $8,20 per day for lodging with a local
family and 3 meals.
Applicants
can get directly in touch with Yanapuma, by sending
an email with their resume to intern@yanapuma.org.
We will get back to them right away to arrange a Skype meeting to be able to tell
the student in detail about the internship and find about a bit more about the
applicant as well. Yanapuma also has a website (www.yapuma.org) where general information
about Yanapuma can be found.
If
more information is needed contact us at intern@yanapuma.org,
or email Pascal (the current GIS intern) at pascal@uvic.ca.
