Jawless Fishes is a one-time recording session (so far) with vocalist Cynthia Shelton, who found us and our music through our website. After exchanging music demos via the internet, Jawless Fishes met for a single marathon weekend in October of 2004 in Jericho, Vermont to record "Field Notes" a collection of original pop and folk tunes, and a few classic jazz vocal covers. 2004.10.09. Field Notes.
This was a challenging recording session. Cynthia is a great vocalist and very creative songwriter, but some of these songs she had only performed a capella, so we had to work out the chords and arrangements before we could even begin to rehearse. Generation Gap is a 3-chord pop tune, but it is played in the key of Bb, and the chord changes and timing kept us on our toes. Muse is a wonderful tune about song-writing, but we had trouble with the chords until Gary suggested we use an old Ventures rock chord progression (Am/G/F/E), which worked nicely. Cash Cow is Cynthia's answer to my solo song Maryanne's Blues, and it has some fancy acoustic bass work by Gary. Cynthia plays banjo on the old Mose Alison tune It Didn't Turn Out That Way, and guitar on Some Things Take Time. Rumpole's Walk is Cynthia's clever homage to my chow-chow Rumpole (see the photo on my homepage), with Gary contributing knee-slapping percussion and canine sounds. For that tune, I am fingerpicking an electric guitar, which sounds like a bass. The bass line is actually a guitar etude from Rich Severson's Guitar College series.
