Northeastern Soil Monitoring Cooperative

Origins / Steering Committee

Origins

The concept of the cooperative was born at the 2005 Soil Science Society of America meeting in Salt Lake City. After attending a symposium on long term soil experiments, Greg Lawrence and Scott Bailey initiated discussions on a proposal to explore development of a cooperative to advance the use of repeated soil monitoring as an indicator of environmental change in the northeastern United States and eastern Canada. In 2006, the Northeastern States Research Cooperative awarded a seed grant to support an initial meeting, which was held in March, 2007 in Albany New York, with over 50 attendees representing federal, state, and provincial agencies, as well as a number of academic institutions from both countries. At that time, a chair and steering committee were elected, a mission statement and objectives were adopted, and Initiatives were formed. Annual meetings have been held since where additional progress on establishing an active cooperative was made.
