Rosin

Rosin is a pine derivative, and is applied to the horsehair to create enough friction for the proper vibration of the strings. Too much rosin can create a sluggish bow, and effect the vibration and resonance of the instrument. Rosins vary in hardness and stickiness. Some players are constantly experimenting with different types of rosin - others are not picky at all about rosin - they pick one they like and use it forever. Very soft rosins (like some bass rosins) will melt in very warm climates. Talk to a local professional string player about what rosin they prefer for the climate in your area.
