Our Mission: To promote the use and understanding of qualitative research approaches, methods, and tools for purposes of education, research, and public service in the discipline of geography.  The group is to work closely with other specialty groups to promote common interests and develop intra-disciplinary projects.  The group is further charged with bridging the perceived gap between quantitative and qualitative research through dialogue, debate, and establishment of common ground for the purpose of enhancing rigorous research across the spectrum.

We’re turning 10 in 2010!
Do you have ideas on celebrating the QRSG’s 10th Birthday in Washington, D.C. April 14-18, 2010? Please come to the QRSG business meeting in Las Vegas (info at left) to discuss ideas.

Winners Announced!
2009 Student Research Grants

The Student Research Award Committee decided to award one MA ($250) proposal and one PhD ($500) proposal.  They report: “We really wish we had another $250-500 because it was so difficult to settle on just one Ph.D. winner.  These were incredibly well-written proposals, and we were all impressed with the future of qualitative research in the discipline.” Thanks to all the students who applied, their faculty mentors, and many, many thanks to the Award Committee.

Master’s Degree Winner:
Kate Skaggs, Department of Environmental Studies,
College of Charleston, for her proposed research titled “Implications of Emerging Neoliberal Politics on Conservation Governance in the South Carolina Lowcountry

Ph.D. Winner:
Celia (Luna) Vives-González, Department of Geography, University of British Columbia, for her research proposal called: "Negotiating Boundaries: gendered transnationalism from Senegal to Spain"

Congratulations, Kate and Luna!!

Please note: The QRSG has always given the vast majority of its tiny budget to encouraging and rewarding high-quality student research. Please consider joining the QRSG when you renew your AAG membership because our only funds come you’re your dues. More members = more student awards!
