Our Mission: To promote the use and understanding of qualitative research approaches, methods, and tools for purposes of education, research, and public service in the discipline of geography.  The group is to work closely with other specialty groups to promote common interests and develop intra-disciplinary projects.  The group is further charged with bridging the perceived gap between quantitative and qualitative research through dialogue, debate, and establishment of common ground for the purpose of enhancing rigorous research across the spectrum.

Call for Proposals: Student Research Grants
Deadline: Jan. 31, 2010

The Qualitative Research Specialty Group (QRSG) of the AAG is pleased to announce the student research grant competition for 2010. The QRSG will make an award of up to $500 to support a student developing a research project from a qualitative methodology perspective. Both Master's-level and PhD research proposals are welcome and will be judged compared to others submitted at each respective degree level. The committee reserves the option of making multiple awards or none at all, but normally an effort is made to support all of the top proposals. Students may propose research to be conducted anytime through March, 2011.

The QRSG will consider research proposals on any subject of geographic inquiry as long as proposals a) clearly indicate the proposed research topic and aims and b) effectively approach such research problem and research question(s) from a qualitative perspective. Proposals should clearly demonstrate how and why particular qualitative methods (such as, but not limited to: interviewing, archival research, participant observation, visual analysis, etc.) are suitable and necessary to conduct the research project successfully.

While the QRSG places particular emphasis on methodology, students should note that proposals also should exhibit a well-formulated theoretical framework, should be appropriately positioned in the pertinent and current geographic literature on the topic of choice, and should show the relevance of the proposed research to current geographic scholarship. Submissions also should include a simple budget indicating how funds will be used for conducting the research (for example, travel expenses, purchase of software or equipment, etc.) Proposals should be no more than 10 double-spaced pages, excluding figures, references, and budget.

The deadline for the submission of proposals is January 31st, 2010. Winners will be contacted shortly before the AAG annual meeting in Washington, D.C. in April 2010, where the winner will be officially announced. You need not be present to receive an award. Please include a cover letter clearly indicating your name, topic, affiliation, status (e.g., M.A., Ph.D. student) and contact information.

Please send your proposal via email (doc or pdf) to the committee chair, Geoff DeVerteuil at G.P.DeVerteuil@soton.ac.uk

We’re turning 10 in 2010!
Several events are planned for celebrating the QRSG’s 10th Birthday in Washington, D.C. April 14-18, 2010, including a plenary lecture, special panels reviewing progress in the past decade and future directions, and a reception sponsored by publishers of key texts. Search on the keyword “QRSG” in the program for times and locations, or contact one of the specialty group chairs for more information.
