Understanding Student Learning and Modifying Instructions

In following my CLPchild (Miranda) over the course of this past semester (Spring 2003), I gained  knowledge of her spelling abilities and needs.  By following Miranda's work and progress closely I  was able to assess my lesson planning and adapt my instruction to accomodate her needs.  Every child learms differently and deserves to be taught in the way they need to learn.  I feel that the following teaching episode shows the above.

I planned my Word Level Lesson based on prior assessment of Miranda's spelling abilities and needs.  I noticed in many different pieces of Miranda's work that she needed further instruction and practice with vowel patterens within words.  Specifically, with the use of the two vowel patterns: -oa and -ou.  I planned my Word Level Lesson to focus on this academic need of Miranda's.  The following shows the planning I did to accomodate to Miranda's needs. Itshows the work Miranda did during the lesson to strive toward the mastery of this spelling component.

As the above shows, I planned my instruction to accomodate the needs I observed through Miranda's work.  It is also evident that Miranda made progress in striving to meet the goals of the lesson and in mastering this compenent of spelling.
