On Campus Events
UVM's LGBTQA community is very active in creating opportunities to get together for activism, celebration, learning, or just socialization. Here are some of the events that happen on campus:
Calendar of Events
If you're wondering what LGBTQ events are coming up soon, check out our full calendar, follow our Facebook or our Twitter, or check out UVM Bored, an extensive student-run listing of local events both on and off campus.
Each year, UVM's LGBTQA community gets together to turn regular April into the much more fabulous LGBTQApril. We celebrate with a full month of events to educate, entertain, and empower. Previous events have included everything from poetry to panel discussions, from movie showings to political activism.
During LGBTQApril, the LGBTQA Collaborative safe-space residential learning community hosts their annual Queer Prom. This gives LGBTQ students an opportunity to celebrate prom in an affirming environment.
The LGBTQAcademic Colloquium aims to create a space where we can celebrate a sampling of research and creative works of students, faculty, and staff related to gender, sexuality, and LGBTQ issues.
The LGBTQA Center holds several signature events every year. Over the years, these popular events have become essential fixtures of UVM's queer community. Check below for more info on each event:
The Welcome Back "Family" BBQ is held at the Allen House in the beginning of each semester to welcome LGBTQA UVM affiliates back to campus with friends, fun, and free food.
At the end of each Fall semester, the LGBTQA Center hosts the Home For The Holidays nondenominational holiday dinner. This event is open to all UVM affiliates and provides a warm and welcoming environment for everyone- along with delicious holiday food.
The LGBTQAwards & Rainbow Graduation is an event held at the end of each Spring semester. Awards are given to UVM affiliates who have made important contributions to this University's LGBTQA community. A graduation ceremony is then held, where all LGBTQA students who wish to participate can recieve rainbow stoles and celebrate with friendship and rerfreshments.
The LGBTQA Center hosts a bi-weekly community event in the Allen House on alternating Tuesdays from 5-7pm. Show up to meet new people and enjoy free, homemade food!
Diversity & Equity Unit Events
In addition to the Center, the other offices of UVM's Diversity & Equity Unit host many events that are welcoming toward LGBTQA people. These include the collaborative Jazz Brunch, the Center for Cultural Pluralism's Social Justice Film Series, the Women's Center's Women's HerStory Month and Dismantling Rape Culture Conference, the ALANA Student Center's ALANA Awards Banquet, and more.
Since 1992, UVM has recognized National Coming Out Week with a full week of events including activism, celebration, and education.
UVM recognizes the Transgender Day of Remembrance.
The Translating Identity Conference (TIC) is an independent student-organized conference that explores a wide array of topics in discourses regarding gender and transgender identities, expressions, communities, and intersections. TIC has occurred yearly since 2003, and has since become the largest student-organized conference on campus. Previous keynote speakers have included Pauline Park, Jamie Clayton, and Miss Major.
Free2Be plans several events each year, currently including:
Condoms & Cupcakes
Condoms and Cupcakes happens every year at the start of the Fall Semester. This event draws a lot of people and preparations usually start right away. Posters need to be made, cupcakes need to be baked, things need to be set up. What to expect: Lots of People! Lots of Cupcakes! Lots of Condoms! A Safe-Sex Tutorial! A Really Good Time!
UVM comes alive during October in celebration of National Coming Out Day (yearly on October 11th) and LGBTQ History Month. Free2Be's annual event is the OUTspoken open mic night as part of L/L's Rhythm & Brews program. Come OUT and join us for some slam poetry, laughs, cries, and hot cocoa.
