Bias Incidents & Hate Violence

Harassment...Stalking...Graffiti...Name Calling.

Any violence motivated by homophobia, transphobia, sexism, racism, anti-Semitism, and other systems of oppression--bias incidents, or if the actions are criminal, hate crimes--is not acceptable at UVM.

If you are a target of a bias incident or have witnessed one happening, please call:

Police Services at 656-3473 or
Report it anonymously on-line.

LGBTQA Services, along with the Women’s Center and the ALANA Student Center, has worked extensively with Police Services to make sure the Officers are trained to deal effectively and respectfully with bias incidents. If for any reason you’re uncomfortable being in touch with Police Services, you can contact:

the Victim Advocate at 656-7892,
LGBTQA Services at 656-8736,
or the Counseling Center at 656-3340.

All three places are set up to provide you with support and advocacy.

Off-campus, SafeSpace provides support for LGBTQA survivors of violence. They can be reached at 863-0003.

Currently UVM is revising the Bias Incidents Protocol, outlining the steps the University will take when responding to a bias incident. Stay tuned for the new protocol coming soon.

Still unsure of why bias incidents need to be taken seriously?
Take a look at the bias incidents (Microsoft Excel spreadsheet) that occurred at UVM during the 2003-04 school year. This document only includes bias incidents that were reported to Police Services. Think about how unwelcome and unsafe these incidents might make you feel if they were targeted at you or at a community you belonged to.

STOP HATE!
